How ADHD causes issues with impulsivity & hyperactivity

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the prefrontal cortex of the brain. While it causes a wide variety of symptoms, from difficulties with concentration to issues with time management, two common symptoms that we'd like to highlight in particular are ADHD impulse control and ADHD hyperactivity.

What is impulsivity in ADHD?

Impulsivity is characterized by having difficulty with resisting urges or impulses. In the context of ADHD, impulsivity can manifest in many ways, often seen in childhood in behaviors like interrupting and blurting out answers. ADHDers also might make impulsive choices without considering the consequences, including taking part in risky behaviors, engaging in spending frenzies, or struggling with eating disorders.

What is hyperactivity in ADHD?

ADHD Hyperactivity is a feeling of restlessness or fidgetiness, which can result in a strong desire to constantly be moving, tapping fingers, or squirming in a chair. People with ADHD often have trouble staying seated and might be excessively talkative at inappropriate times.

Difference between ADHD & impulse control disorders

Though impulsivity is a common symptom of ADHD, Impulse Control Disorder is a different group of conditions. A person with ADHD might have trouble resisting certain impulses, which can be a difficult symptom to deal with. However, for a person with ADHD, impulsivity is usually not the main complaint or symptom they deal with. Impulse control disorders (such as gambling addictions, kleptomania, compulsive sexual behavior, and others) carry their own diagnoses, even if said disorder coexists with a person’s ADHD.

Certified Coaches

Our coaching team consists of certified ADHD coaches, each specialized in helping adults with ADHD overcome the challenges that get in their way. Our coaches provide personalized support and guidance to help each user find and develop effective strategies and coping mechanisms that work for them specifically.

Tools

We offer the tools and resources you need to manage your impulsivity and hyperactivity symptoms, everything from one-on-one messaging with your coach to mood trackers and self-guided CBT informational resources.

Weekly Online Visits

Our coaching services include weekly visits with a certified coach who provides ongoing support and guidance. This builds accountability and allows you to stay on track with your goals. By having someone to report to each week, you can regularly debrief with your coach about your impulsivity, determining how well things went and brainstorming how and where you might improve.

CBT Programs

We offer Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) programs that allow members to identify the thoughts and behaviors that lead them into trouble and replace them with more healthy and positive ones. This is an effective way for many people with ADHD to balance their hyperactivity and learn how to stop impulsive behavior.

Who is Agave Health for?

Our coaching services are designed specifically for adults with ADHD, but they can also be beneficial for anyone struggling with impulsivity, hyperactivity, or any other common symptom of ADHD, even without a formal diagnosis.

What our members say

I have benefitted so much from my Agave coach's advice and tips. ADHD is a daily struggle but since joining Agave days have been so much easier. It's not as hard to take care of myself now.

Valerie

I am so grateful for my Agave coach taking the time to listen to me. It makes me feel seen and like my concerns are valid. I am grateful to have someone understand me.

Jeremy

It is so reassuring to have my Agave coach by my side. Honestly, I think I'm the most balanced right now than I can ever remember being.

Katie

My partner doesn't struggle with ADHD and doesn't grasp how much the subsequent executive dysfunction affects my life. With medication not bringing the "aha" moment I hoped for, you have no idea how much the Agave help means to me.
