How ADHD causes issues with work-life balance

In general, ADHD can make a person's working life difficult. For most people, work presents a challenge of some kind, so keeping up with one's workload can be challenging even for a neurotypical person. However, adding in ADHD and juggling work responsibilities can become a truly frustrating experience.

ADHD at work can often cause people to overcompensate, throwing every ounce of spare mental energy into their work to ensure that they don't miss anything and keep up appearances with their employer. Living an exhausting lifestyle like this can easily spill into your personal life, leaving you with little energy to spend on leisure, hobbies, and your loved ones.

This is before we even touch on symptoms like Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD), a common symptom in people with ADHD that manifests as extreme feelings of shame or humiliation during moments of rejection or reproach (whether that rejection is real or just perceived).

Many people with ADHD have been told their whole life that they were bad students or bad employees or lost opportunities and damaged relationships because of their condition. A lifetime of these messages takes a toll. In an effort to prevent feelings of RSD, many adults with ADHD will double down on their work efforts, pushing harder at organization and efficiency to avoid facing further problems in their careers. Long-term, this can be a recipe for burnout, as balancing time between work and personal life becomes more difficult when you don’t have the energy for either.

Another potential obstacle that ADHDers can face when searching for work-life balance is hyperfocus. The ADHD brain struggles to regulate attention, and while that often manifests in a person's attention wandering away from less engaging tasks, it can also cause the opposite. If a task somehow lines up with an ADHDer's interests, it might be difficult to pull them away from it. This is hyperfocus.

Hyperfocus might seem like a positive symptom, and indeed, it can often be useful if the object of your focus is something you need to get done. But hyperfocus is a double-edged sword because when it strikes, it becomes all too easy to neglect important self-care (eating, sleeping, etc.) and even personal relationships.
